The Rescue is a novel written by Nicholas Sparks an American novelist.[1] On October 15, 2010, The Rescue was given the award of being one of the New York Times Best Sellers.[2] Nicholas Sparks has written The Notebook and The Rescue which are two out of five of his books that have been on best sellers list. He has four of his novels which have been turned into movies; such as, Nights in Rodathne, The Notebook, Message in a Bottle, and A Walk to Remember. Plot Summary

While Denise was driving to her home with Kyle, her son, on the way back to Edenton, North Carolina, it was a rainy night and a deer jumped out in front of her car. Denise swerved causing her to run off the road and into the tree line. Taylor McAden a firefighter drives up on the scene and finds Denise banged up pretty bad. Denise looks in her backseat where Kyle was suppose to be sitting his car seat. She starts to panic because he isn’t there. She turns to the fireman. [3] “You have my son, don’t you?”.[4] The rain started to fall even harder than before. Taylor and Denise were frantically screaming Kyle’s name hoping to hear him or find him, but they had no luck at this point. They had a whole search party looking Kyle. Finally hours later they found him curled up under some brush in the woods. Taylor got a call about a fire at the warehouse. He goes and he rescued people out of the burning building there was only one death and it was Taylor’s best friend, Mitch. Finally, Taylor and Denise start dating. They get married in the end and have a son together. Kyle finally starts talking better and tells his mother he loves her and calls Taylor daddy. [5]

Main Characters

  • Denise Holton--has no family both of her parents have passed away. She is a single mother of a child with severe learning disabilities by a former one night stand. She was a school teacher for many years but now she doesn’t teach anymore, she spends all her time trying to teach her son how to speak. She has a part time job as a waitress and makes just enough money to get by. [6]
  • Kyle Holton—is the 4 year old son of Denise Holton. Kyle has severe learning disabilities. [7]
  • Brett Cosgrove—Denise’s former one night stand, leading up to Kyle’s existence. He was engaged at the time and wants nothing to do with Kyle. [8]
  • Taylor McAden—is a volunteer firefighter for the Edenton Fire Department, owns his own carpenter and contractor job. He was the person who found Denise’s son the night of her car wreck. Taylor has had problems in the past with commitment, but that all will change throughout the book.[9]
  • Judy McAden –is the mother of Taylor McAden, she came to the hospital to spend time with Denise while her son was out looking for Kyle. [10]
  • Mitch Johnson—is Taylor’s best friend and a volunteer firefighter for the Edenton Fire Department also. Taylor goes to him and his wife for all the advice that he needs about his relationship with Denise. While Mitch and Taylor were on call, they get a call about a fire in a warehouse. Mitch was found by Taylor; he trapped underneath a collapsed wall in the building. He had passed away. [11]
